Meet Barbara
Age: 45
Surfing since: 2007
Home break: Cherry Hill & Broad Cove
Off the board: As a mama of three big children she spends her time cooking, baking, reading, taking saunas, yoga, trail running, mountain biking, maintaining a 200+ year old farmhouse and generally finds joy in being alive in this earthly body.
Dream break: A place with consistent swell, little to no wetsuit required, no driving and few people. Does this place exist?
The first time Barbara witnessed surfing, she was 12 years old, on a trip to France with her grandmother, and she knew it was something she wanted to experience. At 18, a couple of friends launched her into the ocean with no idea how to surf, and she didn’t have the greatest time. It took another six years before she finally tried again, taking a lesson in La Jolla, California, once again travelling with her grandmother.
After a few years of short surf vacations, Barbara and her grandmother decided to move to Nova Scotia’s South Shore. At 32, she truly began to develop her understanding of surfing and build her skills.
For Barbara, surfing is a space where her whole being feels free. It’s a transcendental experience that keeps her returning to the cold waters for a short dance with infinity.
