Dream break: Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa.
Maki grew up between Lesotho, South Africa, and Saint John, New Brunswick. She started surfing in 2023, seeking it out as a healing practice. What keeps her returning is the way the ocean demands presence. For Maki, surfing is prayer, meditation, play, and freedom, a feeling she describes as God’s embrace. She especially loves sunset sessions, when the beach and water go quiet and, for a little while, there is nowhere else she needs to be.
