I know photoshoots can feel a bit daunting, especially when you’re bringing along your furry little friend(s). That’s why I’ve put together this simple guide to help you feel prepared and excited. I’m here to make the whole experience fun, relaxed, and totally stress-free.
Wardrobe Tips for Humans & Pets
Let’s talk style! When it comes to wardrobe, we want to keep things simple and natural to complement your pet’s personality. Here are a few tips:
For Humans: Think neutral colours, for example earthy tones, soft pastels, and colours inspired by nature (think greens, browns, blues, rust and creams). These will look great in the photos and won’t distract from your pet. Try to avoid patterns and logos unless that's the look you're going for.
For Pets: Same goes for your furry friend! Natural colours that match the environment (like greens, browns, or blues) will blend beautifully. If your pet has a collar, harness, or leash that you love, make sure it’s clean and not too flashy, unless you’re going for a bold look!
Pro Tip: If you’re planning to wear something specific (like a special outfit or holiday attire for your pet), that’s great too! Just let me know so I can make sure we style your session around it.
Tiring Out Your Pet Before the Shoot
To help your pup feel at ease during the session, consider arriving a few minutes early so they can explore the location and get comfortable. A bit of activity beforehand, whether it’s a walk, a quick play session, or simply stretching their legs, can also help release pent-up energy. Just allow enough time afterward for them to settle and cool down so they’re relaxed and ready for photos.
Bring Their Favorite Treats!
Nothing grabs a pet’s attention like a tasty snack! Bring along their favourite treats so we can reward them for a job well done and use them to capture those perfect, alert expressions. I also bring treats with me, so if your pet has any allergies or sensitivities, just let me know ahead of time as I want to make sure everything we use is safe for them.
Toy Time!
I use squeaky toys and crinkly bags to catch your pet’s attention and get their best expressions. If your pet has any noise sensitivities, let me know in advance and I’ll make sure we avoid anything that might make them anxious. We want everyone to feel relaxed and happy! If they have a toy at home they really enjoy, feel free to bring it along.
Location: Where Will We Be?
Whether we’re shooting in a park, on a beach, or even your backyard, I want to make sure the location fits your pet’s comfort level. It's also important that I know how your pup does around other dogs and people. If your pet prefers a more secluded, calm environment, we’ll choose a quiet spot away from distractions. If they’re social butterflies, I’m happy to shoot in busier areas with more activity. Just let me know what feels best for your pet!
Dressing for the Weather
Let’s keep the weather in mind! Since we're shooting outdoors, be sure to dress comfortably for the temperature, whether it's a cozy sweater for chilly days or light layers if it’s warm. I’ll do my best to work with the natural lighting, but don’t forget sunscreen or a hat if it’s a sunny day! If it’s rainy or very windy, I’ll reach out to reschedule. You and your pet’s comfort and safety are always my top priority.
Hot tip: Bring Extras
Just in case, bring a few extras like:
Water for your pet (and you too!)
A towel or wipes for cleaning up muddy paws or fur
A toy they love (in case we need some extra help with posing or attention!)
A backup leash or collar if you have one
Get Ready to Have Fun!
At the core of your session is the connection you share with your pet; the quirks, the cuddles, and everything in between. We’ll keep things easygoing and fun so those real moments can shine through. And don’t worry if your pet isn’t posing perfectly. That’s not what we’re after. The best photos happen when you’re simply enjoying your time together.
